[edit] Anthropogenic causes
Human induces causes of species becoming threatened:
- anthropogenic Climate Change - changing bio-regions
- Habitat destruction - land clearing, for agriculture, mining, urban expansion,
- non-native species introduction - such as the rabbit into australia
- Pollution - chemical pollution, water pollution,
- hunting for sport or food. includes shooting, fishing, netting,
- baiting - used for pest species, such as foxes, but often affects native species too.
[edit] Organisations who track threatened species and their causes
In australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (aka the department for fucking up everything not underground) deals with baiting and some forms of pollution.
The World Conservation Union keeps track of numbers of endangered and threatened species, and estimates 16,306 species out of 41,415 species evaluated (39%) world wide[1].
