Terra Preta de Indio is the name given to a certain type of rich, dark soil, found in a number of places in the amazon basin. The soil is unusual, as most of the soil of the region is fairly unfertile under the thin rainforest top soil layer. it is thought to have been created by indigenous peoples prior to european invasion.

Terra Preta de Indio is very fertile, and is understood to have been created by adding charred biological material (such as charcoal, from timber).

Terra Preta is undergoing trials in Australia, using the Pyrochar waste from bio-electricity production. the process has the benefit of dramatically increasing soil fertility, as well as helping the soils absorb carbon dioxide, and so are a possible method of mitigating climate change[1]
