The term technology can apply both to the ideas that form the backing for the tools we use, as well as the tools themselves.
Common perceptions of technology assume that it moves forward, each new invention building on previous ones. This leads to the technologist view that technology will ultimately save us from all of life's problems.
hard technology refers to high-impacts, advanced tools, such as computers, cars, etc. These technologies rely on numerous other technologies before they can be built, or even used. In contrast, soft technology doesn't usually do as much, but it also has less environmental and social impact, and is generally easier to make and use. Depending on the situation, a combination of both may be required.
