Pascua Lama Gold Mine
From Envirowiki
Pascua Lama is a mountain on the border of Chile, and Argentina. Barrick Gold, the world's largest gold mining company, wants to mine the mountain, in a process called Mountaintop Removal Mining. The mine site lies between a number of glaciers, and opponents to the mine (both environmentalist and social justice activists), say that the mine will damage large areas of the glaciers, impacting on water flows to downstream ecosystems and communities. The mine is likely to contaminate the watershed with heavy metals, and cyanide.
