Nuke-Free Future
From Envirowiki
there are many reasons to campaign for a Nuke-Free Future. Nuclear Radiation is deadly. It mutates and deforms DNA. There are no safe disposals to the huge amounts of nuclear waste created by the nuclear industry. A massive global stockpile exists in just the the first 60 or so years of the atomic age. Nuclear waste remains harmful to the environment, and depending on the grade, radioactive waste is harmful for thousands or millions of years.
Our descendants will live the legacy of the nuclear age with untold consequence. Humanity has never had to store something so dangerous for such a huge length of time.
We have seen the loss of life and the suffering of the survivors from the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and the thousands of nuclear tests around the world in the last 60 years, including Indigenous people, the disasters of Chernobyl, most notably, and other nuclear power station accidents, the leaks and spills at uranium mines and their uranium tailings dams, and the unprotected sites of nuclear waste, exemplified by Russia.
Nuclear technology, while it has had slight benefits in terms of medicine there are only a handful of isotopes that are not made by alternative technologies with much lower environmental impacts now. Most people have not been made aware of the viable alternatives to nuclear medicine. Powerful Politicians and nuclear spin doctors may advocate claims of cheap power, but is this really a benefit, or a distraction? and is it the reality? The reasons put forward for nuclear advancement often don't hold up to scrutiny and have come at a huge price.
[edit] Problems with nuclear technology
some of the worst problems with nuclear include:
- Uranium Mining, which destroys and contaminates the land around it, and requires huge amount of energy, water, and toxins
- radiation is a danger through the whole process, especially during transportation
- nuclear weapons proliferation
- Nuclear waste - there is no known way of safely disposing of nuclear waste.
