The Australian Coal industry is on of australia's biggest industries in terms of profit for companies, and includes mines in most states. Australia has the world's largest coal export port (by volume), Newcastle Coal Port, which currently exports 80 million tonnes of black coal per year. Australia produces all it's own coal for electricity, importing none, but generally sells the highest grade coal, and keeps the cheaper, dirtier coal for burning in it's own power stations

[edit] New South Wales

Coal is New South Wales biggest export industry. as of 2003 there were 56 coal mines in New South Wales, mostly underground, producing 114.3 million tonnes (2001) of saleable coal. NSW's coal exports have been around 80 million tonnes (representing a little over two third of total production) for the past few years, but this will soon increase due to the massive expansion of the entire Hunter Valley Coal Chain, including the Newcastle Coal Port.
